Winter Care Berry Specials at the Integrative Healing Arts Studio West Reading Massage Reiki Holistic Health

November at Integrative Healing Arts Studio

November Blessings! The air has turned cooler, the evenings come earlier, and the leaves are turning their beautiful colors and falling one by one. November teaches us to let go…

It’s not easy to let go of the warm sunny days of summer and the bountiful harvests it brings. But nature has its cycles, as do we, and with each changing season we have a new opportunity. The trees let go of their leaves to make room for next year’s growth. They gracefully drop their leaves, returning them to the soil which will provide vital nutrients back to them over time.

The season of autumn is associated with the metal element in Chinese Medicine. In us the metal element corresponds to the lungs and the colon. The colon is about letting go of waste matter, so that the lungs can take in new inspiration.

It is a time of settling in and preparing for rest but too often we push against the cycles of nature and keep plugging away at our daily lives. In order to get the most out of this season and honor the body, mind, and spirit, there are some simple changes we can make.

Our activities should really just be limited to the ones that are truly essential, (easier said than done, I know) There is less energy around so we have to conserve energies and this includes letting go of thoughts or beliefs that no longer serve us. Holding onto to these thought forms limits our ability to take in new ideas, preventing us from moving forward. This time of year is also a good time to go through your cupboards and belongings and getting rid of anything you don’t need because in clearing away the old, we are now receptive to the new!

Change your diet with the seasons, now is a time to eat warm hearty foods like soups and stews that nourish the body and support the immune system. Heavy grains, seeds, roots, root vegetables, and squashes help move the body’s energy inward for the Winter. Pungent (spicy) flavors also correspond to the Metal element and pungent flavors range from hot and warm like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, anise and ginger, onions and radish to the cooling mints and lemon balms. The fragrance of these pungent foods help to stimulate the appetite, increase digestion, create warmth and circulation, and dispel phlegm and mucus.  Add warming spices to mulled ciders, warm applesauce, baked fruits and desserts or simply sip on a warming cup of tea.  Aromatic herbs like sage, rosemary and thyme help to circulate Qi and stimulate the digestion, and mints can help drain sinus congestion. This butternut squash soup is simple to make and supports your stomach Qi and digestion. Sprinkle some nettle leaves on for added nourishment and energy.

Make sure to honor your body and get rest when it is needed. Spend some time nurturing yourself with restorative yoga, massage therapy, Reiki, meditation, and warm baths.  Get out for a relaxing walk in nature through the falling leaves and breathe in the crisp cool air. Here at the studio the spicy warm fall specials are still going on until November 30th. It’s also a perfect time to warm the body with a hot stone massage or far infrared sauna session. Much of November is already booked so make sure to schedule your services soon! Download the new studio app to be the first to know about new classes, open hours, specials, and last minute openings.

New items are arriving and the Small Business Saturday Open House is right around the corner. The studio will be open from 11:00am-3:00pm on Saturday November 25th with some great specials you won’t want to miss on gift certificates, new essential oil diffusers, and more! I’m happy to now offer Plant Therapy Essential Oils in the healing boutique. Plant Therapy’s standards of quality are some of the strictest in the industry and they are affordable too! Their pre-diluted roll on blends are a perfect match to my crystal aromatherapy diffuser bracelets and the fall blends fill the space with all the scents of this beautiful season.

Hope to see you in November!

Simple Self Care~Benefits of Dry Brushing~Service Special

Dry skin Brushing is an easy and cost effective way to keep your skin soft and smooth as well as keep you healthy.  By adding this technique to your daily routine it can help to exfoliate dead skin cells, improve circulation, stimulate nerve endings, relax muscle tissue, and stimulate the lymphatic system.   It is important to use a natural dry brush and work in small circles, do not use water as it takes away the benefits of the friction. Go lightly at first as your skin gets used to the brushing and could be sensitive.

You can kick off your home wellness routine here at the studio with a Dry Brush and Massage service which is currently being offered for only $60 (regularly $70)until 9/30/17, and for a limited time includes your own dry brush to keep. This 60 minute service starts with a dry brushing of the body and is followed by an Integrative Massage with a nourishing creme for your skin, as always custom aromatherapy is included if desired. Purchase this offer and schedule at your convenience from my online booking site.

A far infrared sauna session is a great addition your Dry Brush and Massage Service, click here to read about how dry brushing and sauna can make a great pair. A Far Infrared Sauna session can be added on to your service for $5 off it’s regular price. You can purchase a Far Infrared Sauna add on session here

Stand alone Far Infrared Sauna services are also available

Coping with Stress the Natural Way

The feeling of being stressed out and constantly overwhelmed is all to common in these times, almost so common that it is accepted as part of everyday life. An annual stress survey by the American Psychological Association states that the overall stress level of Americans is rising with many people in the survey saying they experience both physical and emotional symptoms of stress.

Chronic stress leads to long term health consequences but first the body tries to send out warning signals that are often ignored or pushed off as minor nuisances and treated with medications to make them go away. These little signals like headaches, muscle tension, poor sleep habits, fatigue, anxiety, and more can lead to severe health problems down the road.

It is imperative that you make time to slow down and add a self care routine to your schedule. Complementary and alternative therapies have shown to be extremely effective for coping naturally with stress and stress related conditions. Need a little help in that area? Here at the studio I have an assortment of natural healing services, classes, and herbal or aromatherapy preparations that can help to bring you back to balance the natural way.

Keep your Wellness Goals and Feel Good with Discounted Series Packages

We’ve all been there at one point or another, about three weeks into the new year and all those important health resolutions that were made start to slowly fizzle away. You know, the ones where you said you would exercise more, eat healthier, and make self care a priority?  I understand how difficult that can be, especially when there are so many obligations and you’re not sure if you can stretch yourself any thinner, but one thing is for sure, you won’t be any good to anyone if you are unwell.

The foundation for any wellness program must be your desire to feel better, in fact, according to Abraham-Hicks, “Nothing is more important than feeling good”. When you are in a moment of feeling good you align yourself with the divine energy of the universe which will ultimately allow all other things to fall into place.   As you do things to make yourself feel better, you attract more of that which makes you feel better, The Law of Attraction!

Here at the studio I offer many services and classes that guide you towards a happier and healthier you.  One way to really anchor yourself into a wellness routine is to take advantage of the series packages that I offer. With a series package you are buying a lump of services that you have no other choice but to use, you will actually have to force yourself to schedule that monthly massage, sauna, or Reiki session! (said no one ever) Really though, when you have already paid for the services all you have left to do is schedule them and reap the benefits, one of which is saving money, as by purchasing the series you are getting one free service.  For example if you purchase a series package of five massages you are only paying for four, the fifth one is free!  Many times, especially when working with chronic issues, multiple services, scheduled more frequently, yield the best results. Another benefit of buying the series is you can purchase it easily from my online booking site and schedule them right away, this way you may not have to wait for an available appointment time when trying to schedule a last minute appointment, and on the day of your appointment, you can come and go without having to fumble for payment with that after massage fog brain 🙂

To see available discounted packages see the services and rates page or click on the schedule now button at the top of page which will take you to my online booking site.   If you have any questions feel free to contact me for more information.

There are a few studio policies I should mention: the discounted series packages must be used within six months from purchase date, must be used on the same service, are nontransferable and nonrefundable, and must be paid in full at the time of purchase. Series packages may not be used by more than one individual. These discounted series cannot be combined with other offers or discounts.

Blue Monday-Let the Sun Shine In-Wellness Tips for the Dull of Winter

Usually around this time of year the dark days and chill of winter begin to weigh on me, I curse the cold and long for my summer garden. Blue Monday is a name given to the third Monday in January which is reported to be the most depressing day of the year for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Monday_(date)). Luckily there are many natural alternatives out there to bring the light back in to our spirit and in this post I’ve listed a few of my favorites.

Herbal Support

Herbs support the body in a natural way and can be used to bring the body’s systems into balance.  A well known herb is St. John’s wort which is a wonderful tonic for the whole body and an excellent nervine which has the therapeutic ability to calm the nervous system and support a healthy mood. It has been called the herb of the sun and signals the time of midsummer which is also when its healing properties are at its strongest. Energetically its sunny disposition can be used to dispel the darkness and protect against evil spirits. It is important to get your herbs from reputable sources as some forms have been found not to be pure, recently a bulletin was released about the adulteration of St. John’s wort supplements. A true specimen of the plant should naturally produce the characteristic red color in the preparation and should not contain dyes to make it look that way and the best tinctures are made from the fresh flowering tops of the plant, harvested during the proper time when the healing properties are strong in the plant.

Another favorite herb of mine to use is Lemon Balm, Melissa officinalis, or “Melissa’s Geist” (Melissa’s spirit), as my Oma called it. Melissa’s uplifting aroma and therapeutic properties help to gently calm and uplift and the same time. Using herbs can be a great way to naturally support your body but some do carry contraindications, especially St. John’s wort which can interact with some medications.  It is best to consult a qualified healthcare provider when considering the use of herbs. The studio provides wellness consultations which can help you find the best holistic health support options to choose from.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy can be an easy and fast way to positively affect the mood due to the body’s smell receptors being directly linked to the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain. Many studies like this one have been done to show that inhalation of certain essential oils can help to regulate moods. Some of my favorites include lavender and uplifting citrus scented oils like lemon, orange, and bergamot. I have a fun aromatherapy workshop coming up on January 21st, Banishing the Winter Blahs, where we will be making a nice uplifting blend for you to keep.  There are still a few spaces left for anyone interested, registration is required.

Exercise

There is a strong link between exercise and the mood and researchers have found that people on a regular exercise program show not only physical improvement but mental and emotional health improvements as well (http://www.apa.org/monitor/2011/12/exercise.aspx). Exercise need not be strenuous as a simple walk in nature can work wonders and connect you to the earth and your natural cycles.

Rest and Relaxation

Don’t push against the natural cycles of nature, we are meant to slow down and rest in the winter. Recharge yourself and allow the energy to be stored. There are many ways to incorporate relaxation techniques into your lifestyle which can include meditation, yoga, getting a massage, or a Reiki session. Far Infared Heat Therapy is a great way to relax wrapped in warmth and gain many health benefits. The far infared sauna here at the studio provides the same heat as the sun without the harmful ultraviolet rays, perfect for the dark days of winter.

By incorporating natural healing methods into your lifestyle you are investing in your health and well being and you are surely worth it! Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup so to be able to give your best to others you must first honor yourself. I’ll soon be sitting down with a cup of tea, sifting through the seed catalogs, and dreaming of the return of Spring.

Far Infrared Sauna Sessions Coming to the Studio

I am excited to announce that far infrared sauna sessions will now be available here at the studio and sessions are now being scheduled. Online booking of this service will not be available until sometime next week so contact me for your appointment.  Far infrared heat is needed for the optimum health of all living things and the radiant heat that surrounds you in this sauna penetrates deep into your joints, muscles, and tissues, and increases oxygen flow and circulation. Longwave far infrared heat is completely safe and produces the same far infrared heat as the sun without the harmful ultraviolet rays. A session in the sauna often results in a deep detoxifying sweat, and regular sauna use helps to remove harmful toxins from the body. This far infrared sauna is of superior quality and made with organic hemp, you are completely surrounded by the healing infrared heat, front and back.

Far infrared sauna sessions can be added on to any service or scheduled as a stand alone service. Money saving packages are also available. Note that far infrared saunas may not be indicated for certain people or health conditions, this will be discussed during your intake. This particular sauna is a “dome” type which is like a narrow tube around your body which you lay in.  You will need to be able to climb in and out of the tube easily.  If you have mobility concerns this type of sauna may not be a good fit for you. Please read through the entire page for what to expect from your far infrared sauna session here at the studio. Some benefits of a far infrared sauna include:

  • Stress Reduction and Improved Sleep– traditional saunas are mostly hot air that make you sweat, but far infrared heat provides a gentle, soothing therapeutic heat that promotes relaxation and improves sleep, helping you to relax and promote a deep tissue sweat that leaves you feeling renewed.
  • Pain Relief and Increased Circulation– the deep penetrating heat helps peripheral blood vessels dilate which helps to bring relief to muscles and soft tissues.  Increased blood circulation carries off metabolic waste products and brings in oxygen rich blood to the depleted muscle allowing faster recovery, the heat also helps to reduce soreness.
  • Detoxification– far infrared heat increases blood circulation and stimulates the sweat glands promoting a deep tissue sweat that helps to release built up toxins in the body. Regular sauna sessions help the body rid itself of accumulated toxic chemicals like lead, mercury, nickel, alcohol, nicotine, sulfuric acid, and more.
  • Weight Loss– As the body increases sweat production the heart pumps harder to increase blood circulation. This increase in metabolism burns more calories.
  • Improves Immune System– core temperature is raised which is like inducing an artificial fever which is the body’s natural healing mechanism, this accelerates the immune response.  Enhanced immune system combined with elimination of wastes and toxins form the sweating increases overall health and resistance.
  • Skin Cell Rejuvenation- deep sweating carries off deeply imbedded impurities and dead skin cells leaving the skin glowing and clean.  Increased circulation draws your skins own nutrients to the surface bringing improved tone, elasticity, texture, and fresh color. Increased heart rate and localized blood circulation work together to stop fatty deposits from accumulating liquids in the fat cells to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Before your session– hydrate! Always drink plenty of water before and after your session.

During your session– you may not sweat as much during your first 2-3 sessions which is normal for people who do not usually sweat a lot. It may take a few sessions for the body to get back into the natural rhythm.

What to wear- more skin exposure is preferable, you can wear loose fitting shorts and a tee shirt, a swim suit, or your birthday suit.  If you wear clothing into the sauna you should bring a change of clothes since you may have wet clothes from sweating when you get out.

After your session- make sure to hydrate with water after your session and the rest of the day.

Prices are as follows:

30 minute session- $35

20 minute session- $25

15 minute add on to any service- $20
